Applying for a Marriage License (By Appointment Only)

The bride and groom must be at least 18 years of age

If the couple resides in New Jersey, marriage license applications are filed in the municipality where the bride resides

If the bride resides outside of new Jersey, then the groom must be a Princeton resident

If both parties reside outside of New Jersey, the couple must then apply for their marriage license in the municipality where the couple is to be married

NOTE: Many establishments carry a Princeton mailing address, but are located in other municipalities (ex. Hyatt - West Windsor Township, Marriott - Plainsboro Township). Please check with your officiant or marriage facility to ensure that it is located in Princeton Borough or Township.

Couples must show proof of address, i.e. driver's license, a bill (showing name and address) or a notarized letter from the landlord. Many other Townships carry a Princeton mailing address (ex. Plainsboro, Lawrence, Rocky Hill). This does not constitute residency. Residency is the municipality where the couple physically lives.

Bride and groom must show proof of birth. Original birth certificates or passport

Social Security Number (if applicable). Documentary proof must be given at time of application. (S.S. Card, pay stub, W-2 or health insurance card)

When applying, you must have one (1) witness with you

Witness must be at least 18 years of age

Know both the bride and groom

May be a family member

Be able to speak and understand English

After you apply, there is a 72 hour waiting period before the license can be issued to you

Name, address and phone number of the officiant performing ceremony (i.e. Priest, Mayor, Judge, etc.)

If divorced, must bring "Final Divorce Decree" paper, showing the docket number and the Judge's signature

If widowed, must bring certified copy of former spouse's death certificate

Marriage License applications are taken by appointment only Monday through Friday between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm

Marriage License fee is $28.00 and is payable at time of application
