The Princeton Borough Police Department has
had a bicycle patrol program since May 6, 1996. As of January 1998, the bicycle
patrol unit has been incorporated into the Safe Neighborhood Unit. This unit
is usually comprised of two patrol to four officers. The Safe Neighborhood Unit is responsible for many
"quality of life" issues throughout Princeton Borough. These include drug &
alcohol violations, Borough ordinance violations, & Adopt-a-Cop programs, merchant alert plans, business &
residential security inspections, starting & maintaining neighborhood crime watches,
traffic enforcement in problem areas, foot patrol in specific areas, and of course,
bicycle patrol. Weather permitting, officers are on bicycles for the day and evening
shifts throughout the spring, summer and fall.
The intent of the bicycle patrol is to supplement
our Safe Neighborhoods Unit and to serve as an effective tool in providing service to the
community and in facilitating communication with members of the community.
The bicycle patrol can also prove to effective in
crime detection and apprehension as travel on bicycle provides accessibility to many areas
that a car cannot get to and is a faster mode of transportation than on foot.
Currently, our department has five
"Trek" 21-speed mountain bikes. They were supplied through "Jay's Cycles",
a local bike shop.
